Beach Lake Jamboree races set for Sept. 28, 2017

Sunday, September 24, 2017 - 18:09

Hundreds of kids are expected to take to the trails Thursday, Sept. 28 for one of the biggest local running events of the fall.

Now in its 15th year, the Beach Lake Area Trails Cross Country Running Jamboree is a series of races for kids ages Kindergarten through sixth grade. Last year’s event attracted more than 700 runners to the trails at Birchwood ABC Elementary.

Kindergartners will run a 1.2-kilometer course, first- and second-graders will run a 1.5-kilometer course, third- and fourth-graders will run a 1.8-kilometer course and fifth- and sixth-graders will run a 2.1-kilometer course.

There will be a walk-through at 5 p.m., followed by opening ceremonies at 5:20 p.m. The first race will be Kindergarten girls at 5:30 p.m., with races beginning at 15-minute intervals from the youngest to the oldest age groups.

The event is free, but all participants must preregister and sign a waiver, which can be done at local elementary schools. There will be late registration, but parents are strongly encouraged to sign up before race day.

The event is sponsored by The Anchorage School District and Healthy Futures.

Volunteers are still needed. For more information or to volunteer, contact Caela Nielsen at, Chris Ruggles at or contact you child’s P.E. teacher.
