Murder suspect arrested at Eagle River church
A man wanted in connection with an Anchorage murder was arrested after turning himself in at an Eagle River church Wednesday, Oct. 11.
According to an Anchorage Police Department public Nixle alert, police Dispatch received a tip that a man — later identified as 34-year-old Anthony Aumua — walked into the ACF Church on Brooks Loop and admitted to shooting and killing a man at an apartment in Midtown Anchorage earlier in the morning.
“When Dispatch sent out the information, officers from multiple units responded,” read the online summary of the incident at the church, which sits near one of the busiest intersections in Eagle River. “They coordinated a plan, set up a perimeter and evacuated the church. Aumua exited the church peacefully, was taken into custody and transported to Headquarters for questioning.”
The arrest ended a daylong search for Aumua, who police said should be considered armed and dangerous after officers were called to West 29th Avenue for a report of a shooting at an apartment. When they arrived, police said they found a man dead of a gunshot wound. Police said multiple witnesses were at the scene, and Wednesday afternoon APD released a photo of Aumua asking for the public’s help locating him.
Police said Aumua faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder.
