POLICE BRIEFS: Armed robbers hit two Eagle River businesses
Items in the Police Briefs are taken from the Anchorage Police Department’s online crime mapping system. Details about individual events are provided by the department’s public information office. Defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
On Thursday, Dec. 7 at around 10:26 p.m., police say a man wearing a dark ski mask and jacket entered the Eagle River Microtel, pointed a handgun at an employee and ordered the employee to give him money from the cash register. Police said the employee complied with the man’s demands and the suspect left without hurting anyone.
The suspect is described as a “chubby” white man in his 40s about 5-feet-9 or 5-feet-10 inches tall with a silver goatee. The case remains under investigation.
The robbery was one of two in Eagle River in three days. On Saturday, Dec. 9 at around 9 p.m., police said a man wearing a face mask, beige Carhartt jacket and dark glasses walked into Starbucks and demanded money. The clerk told the man she did not have access to the cash registers, so he took the tip jar and left on foot. Police said the man implied he had a weapon, but none was seen. He’s described as having white hair; police did not give an approximate height or weight.
On Dec. 7 at around 8:52 p.m., police responded to a residence on Whispering Birch Drive for a report of a husband and wife who had been arguing. According to APD, the couple had been arguing throughout the day and at one point the man allegedly pointed a handgun at the woman’s dog and told her he’d kill it if she and the dog didn’t move out. Police arrested Andrew J. Mueller, 49, and charged him with third-degree assault.
On Dec. 8 at around 1:14 p.m., police received a report that someone had broken a lock off a storage shed on Brooks Lane and stolen several items.
On Dec. 8 at around 8:35 p.m., police received a report that someone shot the rear sliding glass door of a home on Cam Island Circle while the homeowners were at home. There were no injuries reported and police said the weapon may have been fired from a nearby bike/pedestrian path.
On Dec. 8 at around 9:51 p.m., police were called for a report of a red sedan weaving and driving 30 MPH under the speed limit on the Glenn Highway. The caller followed the vehicle to Fred Meyer until an officer arrived, at which point the vehicle got back onto the Glenn Highway. The officer stopped the vehicle near the South Birchwood exit and arrested Rheanna J. Cullen, 18, of Chugiak for operating under the influence.
On Dec. 9 at around 10:21 p.m., police were called for a report of an assault on Easy Street. According to APD, Heather D. Hernandez, 39, of Eagle River, had reported an acquaintance had stolen her purse earlier in the day. At that time, APD determined the case was unfounded. When they arrived at the Easy Street location, officers learned Hernandez had allegedly cornered the alleged thief at the woman’s apartment complex and sprayed her with pepper spray. Hernandez was arrested and charged with assault.
On Dec. 10 at around 12:58 a.m., police received a call from someone who said they saw a vehicle hit the guardrail on both sides of the Briggs Bridge before coming to a stop. Officers arrived at the scene and arrested Sarah A. Bergey, 43, of Anchorage for operating under the influence.
On Dec. 10 at around 8:18 p.m., police were called to the Eagle River Bowl following an argument between a man and a woman. Police said the man — Scot A. Yates, 50, of Eagle River — allegedly lunged at his girlfriend, putting her in fear of getting hit. Yates was arrested and charged with assault.
