Public meeting to discuss crime, self-defense

Eagle River Rep. Lora Reinbold will join the founder of a new community patrol and several self-defense instructors at a community meeting on public safety next month in Eagle River.

The “Public Safety Community Awareness Meeting” will include remarks from Rep. Reinbold, Eagle River Community Patrol leader Cliff Cook, children’s self defense instructor Becky Hesser of the Alaska Moving Arts Center and representatives from Alaska Tactical, an East Anchorage firearms training business that bills itself as “Alaska’s Premier Firearms Training and Tactical Weapons Instructors.”

The meeting will be held Saturday, Jan. 6 in the Eagle River Town Center meeting room from 4 to 6 p.m. Reinbold’s remarks will be on “Alaska’s Weak Criminal Law: SB91 & SB54”, Cook will discuss the newly formed patrol, Hesser will speak about children’s safety education and the Alaska Tactical representatives will talk about the company’s “Armed Angelines” women’s self defense class and discuss “Everyday Defense.”

The purpose of the public meeting is to “share your concerns and help us find solutions to Alaska’s out-of-control crime epidemic.”

The event is scheduled to follow a Legislative Town Hall meeting set for 2 p.m. in the meeting room.
