Cobb falls short in national final
Kelly Cobb still has something to shoot for.
After putting together a record-breaking season as a freshman for the Duke University women’s soccer team, Cobb came up one game short of her ultimate goal when the Blue Devils fell 1-0 to Stanford in the NCAA Division I national title game on Sunday, Dec. 4 in Kennesaw, Ga. Stanford finished the season undefeated. It was the first national title for the Cardinal women's soccer program.
Cobb, a freshman from Peters Creek who graduated this fall from Chugiak High, finished the season with a team-high 11 goals and 31 total points — both freshman records at Duke. Cobb also led the team in shots (91), shots on goal (42) and game-winning goals (6). She was also named to the Atlantic Coast Conference’s All-Freshman team.
Cobb had an assist in Duke’s 4-1 win over Wake Forest in the national semifinals.
Duke’s 22-4-1 record was its best in school history, and the team’s appearance in the national final was its second ever.
