Chugiak hockey heading to state
Chugiak captain Josh Smith scored on a breakaway 39 seconds into the second overtime period to lead the Mustangs to a dramatic 3-2 win over East in the opening round of the Cook Inlet Conference hockey tournament at the McDonald Center in Eagle River Tuesday night.
Mustangs senior goalie Joey Lindquist made 38 saves in the game, including a penalty shot midway through the second period with the T-Birds already up 2-0.
Kris Tomazevic started the Chugiak comeback with a tally 10 minutes into the second period to cut the lead to 2-1, and Chad Peterson got the equalizer with 13:04 left in the third.
The teams then skated a scoreless overtime period to set up Smith's heroics.
The win advanced Chugiak into the CIC semifinals and earned the Mustangs one of the conference's four automatic berths in the state playoffs next week. Chugiak hasn't been to state since 2009.
Chugiak will face No. 1 seed Dimond in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Ben Boeke Arena in Anchorage.
In other CIC tourney action Tuesday night, the Eagle River Wolves saw their season come to an end with a 5-0 loss at the hands of South at Ben Boeke.
