Lammers hottest skier at chilly Skiathlon
You can’t ice Isaac.
Chugiak senior Isaac Lammers proved he’s more than ready to move onto his collegiate career in frigid Fairbanks with a dominant victory in the West Skiathlon on Saturday, Jan. 28 at Kincaid Park.
Lammers, who has already signed to ski for UAF next winter, bested East’s Thomas O’Harra by 42 seconds in the race, in which skiers skied two classic loops and two freestyle loops, changing skis mid-race.
The event featured all eight Cook Inlet Conference teams.
Alex Loan placed sixth for Chugiak, which finished second to Service in the boys team standings.
Eagle River’s Will Timmons turned in the top Wolves’ boys performance in 25th.
Eagle River’s Hannah Stevens led all local girls with a sixth place showing, crossing the finish line 2:07 behind winner Marion Woods of South. The Wolverines won the girls’ team title, while Eagle River was sixth and Chugiak seventh.
Amy Hartke finished 13th to lead the Mustangs, and Eagle River’s Jackie Klecka finished 20th.
The start of the race was delayed by an hour to allow temperatures to creep up to near the minus-4 cutoff point. Racers were required to have full ear protection before being allowed on the course, and most stayed bundled up in blankets until shortly before the start of their heats.
