Eagle River boys basketball moves onto CIC semifinal
Eagle River High cheerleaders and students cheer for the boys basketball team Wednesday at West High. The Wolves upset Dimond 62-52.

Sixth-seeded Eagle River upset No. 3 Dimond — last year's Class 4A state champions — 62-52 in the first round of the Cook Inlet Conference basketball tournament Wednesday at West High. Eagle River will face No. 2 East in a semifinal game Friday at 4:30 p.m. with a state berth and conference championship berth on the line.

Intensity propelled the Wolves to victory, senior Eric Roberts said.

"Our mindset coming in," he said. "We know this is it for us."

Despite shooting 19-for-31 from the line, Eagle River made its free throws when it needed to. Leading by five, the Wolves went 12-for-14 in the final 2:10.

Shaquan Rhoades led the Wolves with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Roberts added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Eagle River jumped out to a quick lead thanks to a 10-0 run to start the game and held a 15-point advantage at halftime. That same start will be crucial if the Wolves want to get past the T-Birds, Roberts said.

"We just got to come out strong," he said. "We just got to play our game."

In other Wednesday action, Chugiak's girls fell to tournament-host West 75-53. Andre Samaniego paced the Mustangs with 14 points followed by Brandy Bookout with 13 and Haley Scott with 11.
