West edges Eagle River in CIC third-place game
West High defeated Eagle River 65-60 in the third-place game of the Cook Inlet Conference boys basketball tournament Saturday.
The Wolves' poor free-throw shooting — they were 17-of-33 — was the difference, senior Eric Roberts said.
"Free throws were big," he said. "We missed 16 of them."
Tournament-host West shot 72 percent from the line and made 7-of-10 free throws in the final two minutes.
The Wolves' Shaquan Rhoades nailed a 3-pointer with 10 seconds to go to make it a one possession game, but West's Christian Nidoy sank two free throws to seal the victory.
Rhoades and Roberts poured in 21 points apiece to lead all scorers. Deandre Wilson (13 points), Dazhn Wyche (11) and Nidoy (10) led the Eagles, who had nine different scorers.
Rhoades and Roberts are two of seven seniors for Eagle River. The others include Michael Mothersell, Nicholas Montgomery, Josh Oberlander, Hunter Hill and Andre White.
