Goalie Bobby Hill of Eagle River demonstrates his stance during a break in floor hockey action Saturday at the Special Olympics in Anchorage.
At least three of the athletes hail from the Chugiak-Eagle River area: Bobby Hill, Alex Davidson and Twan Echols.

The lack of snow led to the cancellation of four of seven events - downhill skiing, cross country skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing. The featured events were floor hockey, speed skating and figure skating. Athletes representing Anchor-age, Bristol Bay, Ketchikan, Kodiak and the Tanana Valley took part.

Hill, 23, is a veteran of Special Olympic competitions, having participated in events since age 8. He is one of two floor hockey goalies in the Anchorage Grizzlies' lineup.

The Grizzlies drew a tough first round opponent Saturday, the defending world champion Kodiak Bears. The Bears upended the Anchorage team, 5-0.

Davidson and Eckols competed in speedskating races at the McDonald Center in Eagle River. Both are regulars for the Anchorage Speedskating Club, which trains and competes at that facility. In other years, Davidson had also competed in figure skating.

This year's event title was "Inspiring Greatness,"

Hill's father, Bob Hill of Eagle River, said that Bobby trains year around for the Games. "He's either weightlifting or bowling. Always training," he said.

Bobby Hill will be representing his community and state for Team USA competition in Dublin, Ireland, in June.
