After carrying a 1-0 lead into halftime, compliments of a goal by Junior Jake Odegard, East knotted the score on an indirect free kick late in the second half, said head coach Craig Naylor.
"I thought that East's goal was a bit lucky," Naylor said, as the Mustang junior goal-minder was caught out of position slightly on a chip shot that just cleared his outstretched arms.
"We played very well during the first half and were a bit unfortunate not to put 2 or 3 on the board," said Naylor, adding that strong attacks by Jake Odegard and senior James Chavez were turned aside by East's keeper, Mac Pennington.
The team played Service High School Wednesday. The results were not available at press time.
The Mustang JV boys opened their season with a bang blanking West High School 3-0 Friday.
Girls coach Dan Pinkerton was pleased with the play of his girls' varsity soccer team during their season opener at the Anchorage Football Friday, netting a no-goal tie.
"I wasn't happy that we didn't score a goal. We needed to get that first one. We had several good opportunities but didn't capitalize," said Pinkerton.
Some of the best chances came off the feet of Trina George, Heidi Brehmer and Julie Whitacre. Whitacre's blast minutes into the second sailed just inches to the outside of the right post.
"With the wind and our outside ball, I thought we would have scored in the second half," he said. "Our defense did a good job. I played everyone - I needed to see everybody in a game situation."
The Mustangs lost to defending state-champion Service 1-0 Tuesday.
The girls travel to Juneau this weekend, where they play Pogaso High School of Colorado, Friday, then the host Juneau-Douglas High School Saturday.
"They (Juneau) are always a good, strong team," he said.
In junior varsity action Friday, the girls had their way with East, scoring four goals in the first half en route to a 10-0 decision.
"We didn't mean to run up the score, it just happened," said JV coach Holly Odegard.
