Obituaries

Richard Dykema

Eagle River resident Richard "Papa Rich" Dykema, 57, died May 9, 2004, of complications from multiple myeloma.

Memorial services were held May 15 at the Eagle River Church of the Nazarene. Burial services were scheduled at the Westwood Hills Memorial Park in Placerville, Calif.

Mr. Dykema was born March 19, 1947, in Grand Rapids, Mich. He grew up on Myers Lake in Rockford, Mich., graduating from Rockford High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1966, spending time at bases in Mississippi, California, and King Salmon. He also served as an air traffic controller during the Vietnam War stationed in Ubon, Thailand. He raised his family while stationed in California.

His stint in King Salmon reinforced his love of the outdoors and he became an Alaska resident in 1983. He retired from the Air Force in 1986 and moved to Alaska with his wife, Melba. It was at this time that he really began to love life. He outfitted hunting and fishing trips in Southwest Alaska for six years before retiring to hunt, fish and fly for pleasure.

In 1986, he also received his pilot's license and flew his planes in and out of the Alaskan wilderness.

Over a four-year time span beginning in the late 1990s, he built a cabin on the bank of Lake Clark. It was his pride and joy building it with his own two hands. Rich enjoyed being "in charge," always the planner, provider and security blanket for his family and friends.

He loved to fly family and friends to his cabin for fishing, hunting and sharing memories that will last an eternity.

He was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, Six Mile Sportsman's Club, the Seaplane Pilots Association, the Association of Uniformed Services and VWF.

He also enjoyed sharing time and creating long lasting memories with his wife, children and grandchildren, traveling to tropical locations, camping, snowmachining and motor-homing.

He is survived by his wife, Melba, of 36 years; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Deanna Dykema of Colorado; daughter and son in law Sheri and JD Stinson; granddaughters Shelbi, Shasta and Britney, all of California; father and mother Chester and Judith Dykema; sister and brother-in-law Phyllis and Tom Armstrong; and three nephews, Ryan, Nathan and Andy, all of Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his brother, David Dykema.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established with the Leukemia Society, 5353 W. Dartmouth Ave-LL Denver, CO 80227.

Arrangements were made with Evergreen's Eagle River Funeral Home, 11046 Chugiak Drive.
