Spartan solider dies in Afghanistan of non-combat injuries

Army Spc. Jarrett P. Griemel, 20, a soldier from Fort Richardson, died June 3 at Forward Operating Base Gardez in Afghanistan of a non-combat related incident, the Army said Friday.

Griemel was a member of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, known as the Spartans, which deployed in early 2009 for a yearlong tour of duty in Afghanistan.

The soldier, from La Porte, Texas, was a petroleum supply specialist assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 425th Brigade Special Troops Battalion.

Griemel entered the Army in June 2006 and came to Alaska to join the brigade at Fort Richardson in March 2008.

The brigade’s rear detachment at Fort Richardson will hold a memorial ceremony for Griemel. Details about the ceremony were not available at press time.

Griemel’s next of kin have been notified.
