Melanie Moore

Longtime Chugiak resident Melanie A. Moore, 58, died July 6, 2008, at her residence of liver cancer.

A memorial service and celebration of life was held Saturday at Peters Creek Christian Center.

Melanie was born Sept. 1, 1949, in Greene, N.Y. Her father was in the Navy, so they traveled often and his retirement brought them to the Pacific Northwest. Melanie originally came to Alaska by way of the Malispina on the Alaska Marine Highway. She met and married her loving husband and best friend, John, in 1984 and gave birth to their only but most precious child, Annie, in 1986.

Melanie worked for the Municipality of Anchorage until 2007, and she enjoyed the incredibly supportive people she worked with and for, making her job pleasurable.

The Moores are members of Peters Creek Christian Center and are very thankful for all of the love, compassion, support and prayers.

Her family wrote, “Melanie was a beautiful person inside and out and her relationship with Jesus Christ was the most important and valuable thing in her life. She had a way of leaving Jesus' touch everywhere she went. Her husband and daughter will always remember her as the most loving, caring, compassionate and selfless person they have ever known, and they are very grateful that God chose them to be blessed by her life.”

Melanie enjoyed children and tried to borrow one when she could. One of her most rewarding experiences was volunteering at Providence Hospital for the “Kuddle Kore,” holding and loving babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to help them thrive. She also enjoyed sewing, reading and walking.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jeannette Poulsen in 1985 and Robert Poulsen in 2001.

Survivors include husband, John; and daughter, Annie, who graciously and tenderly cared for her; her only, but very close sister, Minet Poulsen; and nephew, Josh, both of Kirkland, Wash.; her brother, Mark (Sally) Poulsen; and niece, Alex, of Boise, Idaho; younger brother, Karl (Merritt) Poulsen of Lynnwood, Wash.; sister-in-law and good friend, Nancy Griffith and her daughters, Molly and Arika, of Seattle; very special aunt and uncle, Fred (Nancy) Cook of Binghamton, N.Y.; several cousins, Rick Cook of Binghamton, Nancy Banazek of Conroe, Texas, Carol Fox of Lowville, N.Y., Gail Cole of Painted Post, N.Y., Jeannette LaRose of Houston, Texas, Bobby Hohn of Middleton, Del., Jim Hitt of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and another special uncle, Howard Hitt of Port St. Lucie. Melanie loved all of her family members especially those, and there are many, on her husband's side of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Peters Creek Youth Center, attention Zach Chandler, 20640 Chapel Drive, Chugiak, AK 99567, would be greatly appreciated.

Anchorage Funeral Home and Crematory is handling arrangements.
