Bear Paw contests - and the winners are...

It can only mean one thing when the funnel cake line dwindles, the final flower pot has been raffled off and Anchorage Fire Station 11 pulls its truck away from the curb on Business Boulevard: The Bear Paw Festival is over, and it's time to go home.

Each year, some folks go home with more than a belly full of fair food, blue and orange hair or empty pockets as proof of all the fun that could be had.

From the annual pageant to smoked or slippery salmon to look-a-like pets to lucky ducks to floats on parade, here are the 21st Bear Paw Festival contest and competition winners:

Miss Bear Paw 2006, Chelsey Homan; Miss Bear Paw Princess 2006, Hannah Stein; 2006 Top Escort, Matthew Staub; Miss Congeniality, Hannah Stein; Mr. Congeniality, Matt Wonchala; Best Costume, Chelsey Homan; and Best Community Service, Chelsey Homan.

Classic Car Show: Best Street Machine, Mike Leslie for 1968 Camaro; Best Street Rod, Perry Cowles for 1932 Ford Roadster; Best Truck, Jerry Uptmor for 1972 Chevy Blazer; Best Stock Restored, pre-'48 Barry Fowler for 1912 Model T Ford; Best Stock Restored, post-'48, Robert Bandenberg for 1970 Challenger; Best Import, Tim Smith for 1967 VW Bus; Best Competition Vehicle, Rich Nissen for 1967 Camaro.

Tony Anson won the contest to name Spenard Builder's Duct Tape Bear. His name for the bear is "Sam M. Fisher."

The Dog and Owner Look-A-Like contest was sponsored by the VCA Eagle River Animal Hospital with all proceeds going to Alaska Dog and Puppy Rescue.

The adult division winners are: First place, Julie Martin and her dachshund mix, Dasher; second place, Norma Hannan and her Australian shepherd, Katie; third place, Teress Yeomans and her Labrador retrievers, Abby and Tanner.

Winners in the children's division are: First place, Elsie Davis, 5 months, and her pug TayeLea; second place, McKinley Gray, 4, and her dachshunds Maggie and Sniper; third place, Alora Walton, 11, and her dachshund/Rat Terrier mix, Joey.

The Jammin' Salmon Cook-Off winners in the smoked salmon category are: First place, John White; second place, Mary Helms; third place, Arleen Hassell.

Winners in the appetizer category are: First place, Mary Helms; second place, Dennis Traylor; third place, Arleen Hassell.

Winners in the soup/chowder category are: First place, Cindy Calzada; second place, Mary Helms; third place, Shannon Stark.

Winners in the entrée category are: First place, James Isdell; second place, Mark Roullier; third place, Richard Becker.

The award for Best Overall Dish went to Dennis Traylor.

Parade winners include: Grand Prize, Prudential Vista Jack White Real Estate; Bill Lowe Community Spirit Award, Northrim Bank; Rosie McDonald Spirit of the Festival Award, Cub Scout Pack 293; Judges Award, Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Club.

Parade winners in other categories are:

Commercial Float Award: First place, Prudential Vista Jack White; second place, Carrs.

Miscellaneous Float Award: First place, Alaska Veterans Memorial Museum; second place, MOMS Club of Eagle River; third place, Okamoto School of Karate.

Youth Float Award: First place, Cub Scout Pack 293; second place, Eagle River Elementary Optional Program; third place, Eagle River Parks & Recreation.

Nonprofit Float Award: First place, Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions; second place, Tundra Tootsies Red Hat Society.

Autos: First place, Anchorage Corvette Club.

Marching: First place, Alaska Military Youth Academy; second place, Chugiak High School Cheerleaders; third place, Birchwood Civil Air Patrol.

Animal: First place, Horse Drawn Carriage Company Cinderella Carriage; second place, VCA Eagle River Animal Hospital.

Tri-Bear-a-Thon winners are: Grand prize, Andrew McGhan; First place, Colin Woodman and Jordan Woodman; Last to Finish, Sallie Bynum; Best Costume, Really Desperate Housewives-Dee Hibbert and friend; Oldest Entrant, Leo Hannan; Youngest Entrant, Carter McCormick; Best Legs, Zack Nanger; Farthest Away Entrant, Andrew McGhan from New Zealand; Most Family Members, the Halstead Crew.

Matanuska Valley Credit Union's "Hometown Humpies" won top honors in the Slippery Salmon Olympics. Placing second were Association of the U.S. Army's "Arctic Warriors."

If you smelled something rotten in Chief Alex Park Friday, it was probably the Odor Eaters Rotten Sneakers Contest. The winners are: Grand Prize, Hannah Russell; first runner up, Mason Bennett; second runner up, Seth Dinkel; third runner up, Graham Dinkel; and Purple Sole of Valor, Mark Dinkel.

The Go Whole Hog Motorcycle winners are: Three-Wheel and Side Car, Bob Griffiths: People's Choice, David Lancaster; Touring/Bagger, Monty Montgomery; Vintage Custom, Dawayne Anderson; Vintage Stock, Gregg Haggard; Radical Custom, Joe Kaiser; Sport Bike, Jason McGee; Under 1000cc Custom, Mark Hazard; Over 1000cc Custom, Eric Carlson; Over 1000cc Stock, Warren Weldon; Dual Sport, Jo-Al Hintz; Rat Bike, Chris Brosh; Chopper, Joe Kaiser; Ambassadors Choice, David Lancaster.

Eagle River Rotary club members sent more than 1,000 numbered ducks down the race slough and into the pool during the I-Did-A-Duck Race Sunday.
