The Chugiak Volunteer Fire Department would like to remind people that even with the recent rain, there are still ignitable grasses, trees and tinder that could easily get out of control. Wildfires could start and spread with a spark and a little wind, said Jeff Hartley, public information officer for CVFD.
Here are a few fire safety tips to remember:
Build a campfire away from overhanging branches, dry grass, steep slopes and rotten stumps or logs. Drown the coals and embers with water and stir the remains. Add more water and stir again to be sure all the heat is gone. Keep a shovel and water nearby in case things get out of control. Call 911 immediately if the fire spreads.
When using a barbeque, never add lighter fluid to the coals after the fire is started to speed it or restart a dying fire. Also, make sure the grill is on level ground and is steady. After cooking, soak the leftover charcoal with water.
People who smoke cigarettes outside should be cautious and make sure they don't flick a lit cigarette out a car window or just drop it on the ground without grinding out in the dirt.
Be sure that lanterns, camp stoves and heaters are cool before refilling them with fuel. If fuel spills, move the item before starting or lighting it. CVFD said to never light a camp stove or lantern inside a tent or camper. Try to use flashlights near or inside tents and don't use candles.
Filling up four-wheelers, lawnmowers and power tools can also be dangerous. Let the engine cool before filling it and do it either outside or in shed away from the house and garage. CVFD said the main cause of burns for teenagers is caused by gasoline.
