Elmendorf Air Force Base has a new commander. Col. Thomas Bergeson will take over the 3rd Wing sometime in mid-August.
Airman 1st Class Laura Turner of Elmendorf's public affairs office said they are still learning the details about the new commander, and only learned of their new leader Monday. Col. Richard Walberg will stay in his position as vice commander, Turner said.
Bergeson was slated to take over the 4th fighter wing at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Goldsboro, N.C., but was reassigned following the death of Elmendorf commander Brig. Gen. Thomas Tinsley July 27.
Bergeson's previous assignment was as chief of the aviation division of multinational forces in Iraq. He did everything from help Iraqi forces to establish aviation law to security for commercial planes. He also served as vice commander of Langley Air Force Base's 1st Fighter Wing in Virginia.
Bergeson has more than 3,000 hours in fighter aircrafts.
