Pauley, 69, civil war history buff and decorated Army veteran

Eagle River resident Richard Pauley, 69, died Sept. 14, 2009, at his home. A public viewing was held Friday at St. Andrew Catholic Church, followed by a rosary and a vigil. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday.

He was laid to rest Monday, with full military honors next to his wife, Patricia, at Fort Richardson National Cemetery.

Richard was born May 30, 1940, in East Cleveland, Ohio, to R. Eugene and Frances Pauley. He lived in Ohio during his youth. He graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1962 and thereafter joined the U.S. Army.

On Aug. 1, 1964, he married Patricia L. Foran at Fort Campbell, Ky. They had two children together, Christopher and Michael. His military career included service in Vietnam, 1965-66, and Thailand, 1969-70. He served with the 101st Airborne Division. His decorations included the Bronze Star with 2V Device, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, and Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster.

In 1970, he was transferred to Fort Richardson and remained there until his honorable discharge in 1976.

Richard was involved in many activities at St. Andrew Catholic Church. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus, and also served on the board of directors for the Denali Youth Academy.

His interests included Civil War history, tending his many flowers and gardens, and caring for a menagerie of small animals.

He is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Kecia Pauley of Loveland, Colo., and Michael and Camille Pauley of Kenmore, Wash.; brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Barbara Pauley of Lombard, Ill.; sister, Linda Pauley of Plantation, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Frances; and his wife, Patricia.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations be sent to the Knights of Columbus, John Forsting Council, P.O. Box 771051, Eagle River, AK 99577.

Arrangements are with Jansen's Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
