Hurd, 61, retired Marine and dedicated volunteer

Guy "Larry" Hurd, 61, died Sept. 22, 2009, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. A visitation and service were held Monday at Evergreen's Eagle River Funeral Home. His cremated remains were buried at Fort Richardson National Cemetery Wednesday.

He was born June 5, 1948, in Jackson, Mich., where he was also raised. He was a lifetime member of V.F.W., McKinley Mountain Men Club, N.R.A and the N.M.L.R.A.

He coached football for the Boys and Girls Club of Eagle River. He was a contributor and donator to Toys for Tots, Salvation Army, U.S.O., Marine Corps Association, Beans Cafe, Paralyzed Veterans of America, Special Olympics, C.O.H.T. and the American Cancer Society.

He worked for British Petroleum for 40 years and B.P. flew their flags at half-mast on Sept. 23, in honor and recognition of his years of service.

He volunteered at the Vietnam Veterans Center and enjoyed all sorts of outdoor activities. He was a volunteer fireman on the North Slope for B.P. for years.

He had multiple belts in both Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do.

He moved to Alaska in 1979 from Lima, Ohio. He was a Purple Heart recipient while in the Marine Corps serving in Vietnam.

He is survived by his wife, Catherine; a son, Joseph (and his wife April I. and their children Jonathon, Tydra and Christina), a daughter April D.; his mother, Lady Alice Hurd of Ohio; a brother, Gerald (and his wife Bev and their family); sisters, Neesey and Lynn Hurd (and their families).

Arrangements are with Evergreen Memorial Chapel.
