Hviid, 97, self-employed portrait artist

Aug. 10, 1912 - Oct. 5, 2009

Eagle River resident Emily Hviid, 97, died of natural causes in her home on Monday, Oct. 5, 2009.

A celebration of her life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Eagle River VFW Post.

Emily was born in Riga, Latvia, on Aug. 10, 1912.

Emily was interested in art and was a self-employed portrait artist. She also worked as a technical illustrator at IIT and Harvard Business School.

During her life she was a co-owner of a restaurant and pastry shop in Chicago. Emily moved to Alaska in 1990.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerhard Hviid; her parents; sisters, Anna and Paula; and her beloved niece, Aina Staner.

Survivors include her son, Nils Hviid of Eagle River; grandchildren, Susan and Nils Hviid of Anchorage; partner in life, Cathy Moore; great-grandchildren, Michael Hviid and Tara Marie Hunter of Anchorage; and numerous extended family members.

Arrangements are with Janssen's Eagle River Funeral Home.
