Veterans Day events on planned in area

Several events have been planned throughout Southcentral Alaska for the week surrounding Veterans Day Nov. 11.

The 11th day of the 11th month has been set aside as Veterans Day since 1978, although a day has been designated to honor veterans since 1926.

NJROTC

The Chugiak High School Naval JROTC holds it annual Veterans Day ceremony Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Steve Primis Auditorium. The program features a speaker, choir performances and a video to honor those who are serving or who have served. The event is free and open to everyone. Call 742-3182 for more information.

Fort Richardson

A Veterans and Remembrance Day Ceremony has been planned for 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Fort Richardson Armory. The event is open to the public. Kalei Brooks, spokeswoman for the Alaska National Guard, said the keynote speaker is World War II veteran Red Boucher. Gen. Craig Campbell and David Stockwell, deputy director of the Alaska VA Healthcare System, are also scheduled to speak. The approximately hour-long service will feature the playing of Taps, a presentation of wreaths and the unveiling of the Alaska National Guard Wall of Honor.

Immediately following that service, the Canadian Forces from Elmendorf Air Force Base will hold an outdoor observance at the Fort Richardson Cemetery. That is also open to the public.

American Legion

The American Legion in Peters Creek hosts Veterans Day services at the post at 11 a.m. Nov. 11. The event is open to members, active duty military and their guests. Call 688-2354 for more information.

Alaska Veterans Memorial Museum

The Alaska Veterans Memorial Museum hosts a dinner and dance Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Eagle River Lions Clubhouse. The theme for the event is "Honoring our Veterans." The night includes a prime rib dinner, live band and two military veterans who will speak. Tickets are $50 and include a 2005 membership in the Alaska Veterans Memorial Museum.
