Short Takes

Meeting on road fixes tonight

An open house has been scheduled from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. today to discuss improvements to the Old Glenn Highway between Access Road and the south end of Fire Lake. The open house will take place in the municipal meeting room in the Valley River Center in Eagle River. Improvements to be discussed include lane additions, median and intersection modifications, school zone flashers and continuous illumination. Comment can be submitted at tonight's meeting or by calling 269-0587.

Power outage reported Sunday

More than 30 Matanuska Electric Association customers in Chugiak were without power Sunday.

The outage happened around 3:30 p.m. and lasted two hours. Crews were delayed in responding to the problem due to a major outage out in the Matanuska Valley.

"A fallen tree caused the outage in the valley," said MEA spokesman Bruce Scott. "It's hard to tell what caused the outage in (Chugiak). A lot of times a small animal causes the surge, but it's always hard to determine that, since they're gone after it happens."

VFW to host fund-raiser

The Eagle River Veterans of Foreign Wars post will host a wine tasting Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. to raise funds for the planned Alaska Veteran's Memorial Museum. The project is two years in the making and seeks to document the experiences of war veterans.

"We want to build a museum to educate the public and especially younger people about what these people went through," said project member Al Romashevski. "Pretty soon, we won't have them around, and we want to preserve their memory."

Admission to the wine tasting is $50 per person. Call 694-4200 for more information.
