Even a home-range advantage couldn't help the Mustang varsity rifle team in their meet against top-ranked Dimond Friday.
For the third time this season, the sharp-shooting Lynx either matched or beat the league's previous record prior too this year, said Chugiak coach Jim Granata.
“I wasn't disappointed with our squad. Our team shot well. Dimond is just a very hot team right now,” said the host coach. “We didn't cower in the face of going against such a strong team.”
Granata added that the B and C teams posted some of their best scores in the past three or four seasons.
“I was very proud of them,” he said.
Junior marksman Matt Martin paced the Mustangs with a score of 294, matching Dimond's Stormy Sagmoen. Chugiak's Jimmy Zaken fired a 285.
The Chugiak B team was led by Josh Kishlock and James Klepzig with scores of 275 and 274, respectively. Sean Donan registered the Mustangs' top C team mark at 267.
“I was very proud of the everyone this week, especially the B and C teams. This is just a great bunch of young people,” Granata said.
The Mustangs host Service in action Friday, beginning at 3:30 p.m., and then miss a week of competition due to the Thanksgiving break.
The team will finish out the regular season in an away match at East Dec. 5, prior to the Cook Inlet Conference Championships meet at West High School Dec. 12 and Dec. 13.
