The Chugiak High School Mustangs varsity boys and girls bowling teams experienced opposite sides of the same coin, with the Lady Mustangs recording an 11-1 win and the boys a 11-1 loss to West during the second week of bowling competition, held Thursday at Center Bowl in Anchorage.
Eagle River did not compete as it had a bye.
Chugiak head coach Scarlett Hebbe recognized the performances of both teams.
“Actually, I thought the boys team made the bigger jump in performance between last week and this one, it was unfortunate for them to run into West,” said the coach Sunday.
Showing stellar improvement was fourth-year team member, senior Mariah Hebbe, who not only rolled the week's second-high game of 236 points, but also posted the season's best three-game series of 637 to bolster her season-average to the top of the leader board, with more than 195.17 pins per game. Mariah Hebbe received some help from Kim Victors and Cassy Moore with games of 162 and 168, respectively.
“Mariah did really well. She's at the top of her game right now,” said her mother Scarlett Hebbe.
The Chugiak boy's team was paced by senior Brett Meddaugh with scores of 200 and 231 in games one and three. Meddaugh put together a 615-pin series, seventh best for the week.
Freshman Austin Casias rolled 198 and 208 in games two and three.
“I thought the boys team did really well — they just got beat. If we would have bowled these scores last week, we would have won — easily,” the coach said.
In a quirk of fate, Scarlett Hebbe revealed that the Mustangs would be taking on Eagle River today in the meet held at Jewel Lake.
“You'd think they'd plan that one to be held at Eagle River Bowl,” she said.
