Mary Kirkland

Eagle River resident Mary Elizabeth Kirkland, 85, died Nov. 17, 2003, at Alaska Regional Hospital.

A memorial service was held Nov. 20 at Eagle River Church of God, with the Rev. Bobby Jones officiating.

Born Dec. 20, 1917, in Kearney, Neb., Ms. Kirkland was the daughter of Claude and Myrtle Page and one of 16 children.

Her family wrote: "Mary lived a wonderful life in the name of God and she was greatly loved and supported by her family. Mary arrived in Alaska 41/2 years ago for a visit and fell in love with our state and a little church in Eagle River called the Eagle River Church of God. Since then she has been an active member of the church, which she cleaned almost daily until it sparkled. (She wouldn't let anyone else touch it). Mary was dubbed 'Grandma Mary' and 'G.G.' by her friends and loved ones. Mary was a very feisty woman who once at the age of 83 drove from Eagle River to Nikiski to visit her grandchildren and see the ocean. Mary is the same loving person who would often jump on a plane to visit family. If Mary wanted to do something, be it walking, driving, you name it, she did it. Mary was helpful, independent, loving and -- God help her -- stubborn. Mary was known by the church as our 'Little Prayer Warrior' who prayed for one and all."

Ms. Kirkland is survived by her children, Jesse James, Louise Henderson, Frank James, Lorraine Bance, Barbara Seybold and Gerrie Bosijol; 36 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one child, Dretha Meyers; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were with Evergreen's Eagle River Funeral Home.
