Hess, 76, served his country as a sailor

Oct. 16, 1933 - Dec. 4, 2009

Frederick Morgan Hess, 76, passed away from this life on Dec. 4, 2009, in Eagle River.

Services were held Dec. 11 at Fort Richardson Army Base. He received full military honors with a 21-gun salute.

Fred was born in Uniontown, Pa., on Oct. 16, 1933.

Fred served his country as a sailor in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Cory. He was a Korean War veteran. Hess moved to Alaska in February 1959 and "The Last Frontier" had been his home since statehood.

His family wrote, "May his soul rest in peace and the 'gold' that he always sought for now be found."

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Nelly Hess of Pennsylvania.

Fred is survived by his wife, Alice; daughters, Leona, Cindy, Rena, Lagina and Michelle; son, Timothy; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his companion, Elizabeth and her children, Elsie, Sonny, Carolyn, Mary, Alexie, Junior, Curtis and Kaitlyn, of St. Mary's.
