Mustang basketball teams compete in Vegas

Chugiak, Eagle River to battle in CIC opener on Tuesday, Jan. 10

The Chugiak girls basketball team cashed in on its trip to Las Vegas, defeating Orosi (Calif.) 74-32 to take third place in the Gold bracket at the Gator Winter Classic basketball tournament on Friday, Dec. 30. The Mustangs finished the tourney with a 4-2 record and improved to 5-2 overall.

Chasity Selden scored 21 points to lead the Mustangs, who also got 11 from Eva Palmer and 11 assists from senior Nicole Pinckney.
Pinckney – who signed to play at UAA next season in November – surpassed 1,000 career points during the tournament.

Chugiak advanced out of the first round of the bracket on Thursday, Dec. 29 with a 61-44 win over Flagstaff (Ariz.). Chugiak fell in the semifinals, 50-41, to eventual bracket champion Santa Margarita (Calif.) on Friday morning to set up their third-place romp to close out the tournament.

The Mustangs finished pool play 2-1. Chugiak picked up a pair of wins Tuesday, downing Las Vegas (Nev.) 56-32 and Moapa Valley (Nev.) 60-57. Chugiak then fell 54-49 to Spring Valley (Nev.) on Wednesday to drop into the Gold bracket, the second of three tiers in the tournament.

The Mustangs open Cook Inlet Conference play on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at home against Eagle River.

Chugiak boys compete in Vegas

The Chugiak boys basketball team went 2-1 at the Las Vegas Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. Over the holiday break. On Monday, the Mustangs dropped a 51-45 decision to McQueen High of Reno, Nevada. On Tuesday, Chugiak bounced back for a 65-23 win over the Las Vegas (Nev.) JV. On Wednesday the Mustangs defeated Garfield High of Los Angeles, 64-46. Chugiak improved to 4-2 overall. A score was unavailable for Chugiak's final game in Las Vegas, which was scheduled for Thursday.

The Mustangs open CIC play on Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 7:30 p.m. at home against Eagle River.
