POLICE BRIEFS: Man runs from cops, gets treated for frostbite

On Jan. 18 at around 8:30 a.m., police were called to the Three Bears parking lot for an occupied stolen 2010 Chevy Impala. An officer who arrived on scene attempted to stop the vehicle as it drove away, and the driver, Gerald G. Spies, 33, of Wasilla, allegedly ran from the vehicle. Police say Spies ran into the woods in minus-17 degree temperatures and was chased by several officers. After being given a Taser warning, Spies finally quit running and was taken into custody. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of frostbite to his hands, then transferred to the Anchorage Jail on charges of vehicle theft and failure to stop at the direction of a police officer.

Assault

On Jan. 16 at around 10:43 p.m., and APD patrol officer was flagged down by a male teen who said he’d been assaulted inside the Eagle River Post Office by another group of young men. Police spokeswoman Renee Oistad said the case is still under investigation, but police suspect the assault was targeted and drug related.

Drugs

On Jan. 19 at around 9:30 p.m., an APD officer pulled over Robert F. Turkington, 29, of Anchorage, for speeding. Turkington allegedly had a bag of marijuana in the center console. He didn’t show any signs of impairment and was issued citations for speeding and open container of marijuana.

On Jan. 23 at around 8:30 a.m., police arrested a 16-year-old male who allegedly brought marijuana to a school dance at Eagle River High School. He was charged with fourth-degree misconduct involving a controlled substance.

Burglary

On Jan. 20 at around 12:40 p.m., police took a report that someone stole coins, a welder and other equipment from the car wash on Bill Stephens Drive in Eagle River. The case is under investigation.

On Jan. 18 at around 6:43 p.m., a homeowner on Crabtree Street reported seeing footprints in the snow around their home and signs that someone tried to break into the garage. Nothing was taken.

Vehicle thefts

On Jan. 21 at around 10 a.m., someone reported a red 2012 Dodge truck had been stolen from the Walmart parking lot. Police said the vehicle was running, unlocked and unoccupied at the time of the theft. The vehicle has not been recovered.

On Jan. 22 at around 10:30 p.m., police took a report that a 2010 black Ford Edge was stolen while parked in a driveway on Birch Hills Drive. The vehicle was left unlocked with a spare key inside. The vehicle has not been recovered. On Jan. 23 at around 8:30 a.m., police responded to a report of an abandoned Subaru on Iris Way. The vehicle had been stolen a few weeks ago from a bank parking lot in Eagle River. A license plate belonging to another vehicle was found inside the car. The Subaru’s owner arrived and took the car into possession. Police seized the stolen plate and returned it to its owner.
