Mustangs reach CIC semis, clinch state hockey bid

Chugiak reached the semifinals of the Cook Inlet Conference hockey tournament on Tuesday, Jan. 31, with a 7-1 win over East in a first-round clash at the McDonald Center in Eagle River.

The second-seeded Mustangs got a hat trick from John Hammer as well as goals by Andrew Beckett, Zach Plucinski, Zach Krajnik and Kyle Benson in the win, which also clinched a berth in the state tournament for Chugiak.

Eric Yancey made 11 saves in the win for Chugiak, which advanced to a Thursday, Feb. 2 semifinal match-up at 7:15 p.m. against Dimond at the McDonald Center in Eagle River. The sixth-seeded Lynx knocked off No. 3 seed West 1-0 on Tuesday night.

Tuesday's game was tied 0-0 after the first period, but the Mustangs broke things open in the second with four goals in the final 6:10 of the period.
