POLICE BRIEFS: APD responds to DUIs, thefts

On Feb. 23 at around 8:56 p.m., a motorist called police to report a vehicle driving erratically on the Glenn Highway. A short time later, the same vehicle allegedly almost struck a patrol car on an unrelated traffic stop on the highway. The vehicle was stopped by police, who arrested driver Steven S. McIntyre, 50, of Anchorage for operating under the influence.
On Feb. 24 at around 2:15 a.m., police stopped a vehicle on the Old Glenn Highway near Harry McDonald Road after an officer allegedly observed the driver swerving and speeding. The driver, Glen E. Lankard Jr., 57, of Anchorage, was arrested for operating under the influence.
On Feb. 20 at around 11:30 p.m., a police officer contacted a vehicle in the parking lot of a business on Ashley Park Road and found the driver, Paul A. Gabbert, 31, of Anchorage, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest. Gabbert was arrested and additionally charged with having an open container of marijuana in the glove box.
On Feb. 22 at around 6:24 p.m., a probation officer allegedly watched a man walk out of Walmart with a cartful of items that hadn’t been paid for. The probation officer confronted the man, who fled in a vehicle after abandoning the stolen goods. The case remains under investigation.
On Feb. 23 at around 4:14 a.m., police received a tip that Damen C. Koso, 26, of Anchorage, was working on snow removal in the Fred Meyer parking lot. Koso was arrested on an outstanding warrant.
On Feb. 22 at around 1:37 a.m., an APD officer spotted two 17-year-olds who were walking along the side of the road. The teens dropped a backpack and began running. The juveniles were caught and found to have allegedly been breaking into vehicles after several stolen items were recovered from the backpack. Both were charged with several counts of fifth-degree criminal mischief, second-degree theft and fourth-degree theft.
On Feb. 24 at around 6:20 a.m., APD received a report of a stolen toolbox from the Salvation Army building in Eagle River. The case is under investigation.
On Feb. 26 at around 8:12 p.m., an APD officer driving through the Walmart parking lot was advised by police dispatch that shoplifting was taking place inside the store. Other officers arrived and positioned themselves outside the store. After the woman, 34-year-old Rebecca M. Brotzge of Eagle River, allegedly left without paying, APD ordered her to stop, but she allegedly took off running across the parking lot. Officers caught Brotzge and arrested her on charges of theft and resisting arrest after she allegedly tried to strike an officer with her elbow.
