LIONS CORNER: Bear Paw Pageant coming soon

“Super Bear - Saving One Bear At A Time” is the theme of this year’s Bear Paw Festival. Who are your superheroes? I was honored to be named “Wonder Woman” by my cabinet this year… so how exciting to know our local chamber chose this theme. The festival will be July 12-17, check out for more information.

This year, the Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions Club will sponsor the annual Bear Paw Pageant in conjunction with the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber of Commerce for the 12th year in a row.

This year’s pageant contestants are competing for the titles of Miss Bear Paw Queen 2017 and Bear Paw King 2017. Contestants are students enrolled in private and public Anchorage School District schools located in the Chugiak-Eagle River area. The Pageant will be held July 13 at Chugiak High School at 7 p.m.

Contestants will be competing in front of a packed auditorium where they will be judged on personal interviews, on-stage interviews, congeniality, Alaska costume competition, evening wear competition, community service and on-stage performance.

Scholarships will be presented to the winners of the competition by the Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions as follows:

Two $500 scholarships will be presented to the winner of the Outstanding Community Service Awards at the Bear Paw luncheon Wednesday, July 12 at Eagle River Ale House at noon. One will go to the contestant and one to her escort.

$1,000 scholarship will be presented to the winner of the Miss Bear Paw Queen 2017 the night of the pageant.

The Sleeping Lady Mountain Lions will be meeting to review applications soon. These contestants are the future leaders of our communities. We are very proud to support these youth and be a part of these amazing community.
