Local bars hit by heists

On April 18 at around 5:10 a.m., police received a report that the front glass doors of the Eagle River Elks Lodge had been broken and an ATM stolen from inside.

Four days later, police were called to the Birchwood Saloon for a report that someone had broken in during the night through an interior office door and stolen a safe.

No arrests have been made in either case. The saloon is offering a reward for information about its safe, and the bar’s Facebook page took to social media to issue a call to action:

“Someone broke into the bar last night after closing ( Saturday April 21 ) and got away with our safe,” reads the post. “We are offering a cash reward for any information that leads to the apprehension of these parasites.”

Anyone with information about either crime can contact APD’s non-emergency line at 311 or Crime Stoppers at 561-7867.

Asleep at the wheel

On April 18 at around 6:13 a.m., police were called to a location near East Eagle River Loop and Skyline Drive for a report of a woman slumped over the wheel of the steering wheel of a vehicle. When they arrived, officers said they found the vehicle with one tire partially parked on the curb. Officers arrested driver Stephanie A. Partin, 41, of Palmer for operating under the influence of drugs.

On April 20 at around 5:28 a.m., police were called by a driver who said someone was parked on the North Eagle River overpass and reportedly passed out behind the wheel. Officers arrived and arrested Micalle Culver-Alexander, 45, of Eagle River for operating under the influence.

After chase, wanted man found hiding under bed

On April 18 at around 8:47 p.m., an APD officer pulled over a Ford Focus allegedly driving 95 MPH in a 65 MPH zone near the North Eagle River exit on the Glenn Highway. Police said as the officer approached the vehicle, its driver sped off.

The officer was able to locate the Ford at a nearby residence, and witnesses there identified the driver as Justin Lunsford, 30, of Chugiak. The witnesses reportedly told the officer Lunsford went into the home, and police said they found him hiding under a bed.

Lunsford was taken to the Anchorage Jail on three outstanding warrants, and additionally charged with operating under the influence of drugs, reckless driving, and failure to stop at the direction of a police officer. He was also given tickets for speeding, no proof of insurance and driving while license revoked.

Lunsford has a lengthy criminal history that includes a high-profile car chase last April in which KSRM Radio reported he led them on a 25-mile chase after he and an accomplice were sought in a stolen snowmachine case. In 2015, Alaska State Troopers reported Lunsford was caught on the Seward Highway near Girdwood while driving a stolen vehicle.

As of Tuesday, April 24 Lunsford remained in custody.

Vehicles stolen, recovered

On April 18 at around 8 a.m., police were called for a report that a 2005 Chevy Silverado had been stolen while parked overnight at a residence on Dawn Street. Two days later, a tip to police resulted in the vehicle being found on E. 16th Avenue with its license plates removed.

Also on April 18, police were called to VFW Road for a report that a 1995 Ford pickup had been stolen from a fenced lot overnight. The vehicle was later found on J K Lane in Chugiak with its ignition punched out.

Child assault investigation ongoing

On April 18, police were called by a foster parent who reported receiving a child with a bruised face. Police said the foster parent called police after the child said the bruise was caused by his mother. Police are conducting an investigation.

OUI arrest

On April 19 at around 8:13 p.m., an APD officer pulled over a vehicle for allegedly driving 80 MPH in a 65 MPH zone on the Glenn Highway. The driver, Jay A. Casello, 49, of Eagle River was arrested and charged with operating under the influence.
