ORIGINAL STORY:

A motorcyclist who crashed into a pickup truck at a busy Eagle River intersection Saturday died of his injuries.

According to an update provided by the Anchorage police, the motorcyclist hit the truck on the Old Glenn Highway near Artillery Road, which is where traffic merging from the New Glenn enters Eagle River and Artillery Road becomes the Old Glenn. Police provided few details about what caused the crash, but said the BMW motorcycle burst into flames after hitting the truck and slid across the highway.

On Sunday, all that remained of the scene was a large spot of motor oil in the middle of the busy intersection.

Police said several good Samaritans pulled the motorcyclist away from the flames and extinguished flames on his body. The man — who had yet to be identified Monday morning pending next-of-kin notification — was taken to a local hospital and later died.

Police said the driver of the Ford F150 was uninjured and that an investigation is ongoing.

The crash shut down the intersection for several hours overnight Saturday and into Sunday morning.
