Armed runner scares bears

On July 11 at around 12:41 a.m., police were called to West River Drive for a report of gunshots. According to APD, a man told them he was running on the South Fork Eagle River Trail when he saw a large brown bear and two cubs running toward him. Police said the man told them he yelled at the bears, but couldn’t get them to stop so he fired two shots into the air from his handgun. Police said the bears went the other way and Fish and Game was notified of the incident.

Burglary reported

On July 11 at around 5 p.m., police were notified of a burglary on Waterfall Drive in which an outbuilding on a residential property reportedly had a lock cut and several items stolen from inside.

Suspects elude police

On July 13 at around 6 a.m., a police officer tried to stop a tan Chevy pickup for allegedly driving 61 mph in a 45 mph zone on the Old Glenn Highway. According to police, the driver of the Chevy didn’t pull over when the officer activated lights and sirens; the officer ended the pursuit. Police later discovered the license plate on the truck had been stolen from a different truck, whose owner police said was unaware of the plate going missing until they contacted him.

On July 16 at around 12:51 a.m., a police officer tried to pull over a Ford Taurus for driving without headlights on E. Eagle River Loop Road, but the driver sped off. Police said the officer called off the chase, but shortly after another officer found the vehicle without a driver; the car was impounded.

Woman reports old assault

On July 13 at around 9:48 p.m., police were contacted by a woman who said she had been assaulted on an unknown date two months ago while intoxicated. Police said the woman told them she sought treatment for her injuries, but due to the length of time between the alleged assault and the report, they told her to contact them again with a copy of her medical records.

Police say driver stoned

On July 14 at around 12:49 a.m., police were called by someone reporting a vehicle speeding and failing to stay in its lane on South Birchwood Loop. Police said responding officers saw the car almost run into a guardrail and after pulling the vehicle over claimed to smell a strong odor of marijuana. Police arrested Norma A. Hess, 44, of Palmer for operating under the influence of drugs.

Family violence reported

On July 14 at around 7:54 p.m., police responded to a residence on Shasta Circle for a report that a father had punched his adult son in the face during an argument and arrested Charles D. Watson, 47, of Eagle River for assault.

Bear Paw brouhaha

On July 14 at around 9:50 p.m., police responded to the Bear Paw Festival for a report of a man head-butting another but found no injuries and no probable cause to file any charges.
