New administrators on the job at local high schools
Three new administrators are starting work at two local high schools this fall.
Eagle River High has a new head principal in Tim Helvey, who is moving from an assistant principal role at Chugiak High. Helvey is replacing Marty Lang, who spent seven years as principal at ERHS.
Helvey’s hiring was announced in June.
Helvey will be replaced as activities principal at CHS by Ben Johrendt, a former teacher at Hanshew Middle School. Chugiak principal Megan Hatswell said Helvey’s replacement has become an instant member of the Chugiak family.
“He even ordered himself a custom pair of Chugiak High Nikes,” she said.
Anchorage School District spokeswoman Catherine Esary said the third new face is Derek Hagler is a well-known administrator who previously worked in the district office as the ASD secondary activities director — the role being filled by Lang. Hagler will work as assistant principal for curriculum at Eagle River High.
Hagler has served as the district’s activities director for the past seven years. He takes over the curriculum principal job previously held by Luke Almon, who is now the assistant principal for activities at Bartlett High.
Hagler said he wanted to get back into a school setting.
“The goal was always to be back in a building,” he said.
Hagler lives in Peters Creek, and previously spent a semester as an assistant at ERHS so he knows the area well.
“It’s kinda fun actually working in my community,” said Hagler.
The 2018 school year began Aug. 20 for students, while teachers’ first day was Aug. 15.
