Chugiak bounced back from a tough loss to South earlier in the week with a dramatic 6-3 prep tennis win over Dimond on Thursday at Dimond High.

Five of the day’s nine matches went to third-set tiebreakers, and all five were won by the Mustangs. The mixed doubles team of Jared Elison and Claire Mahoney pulled out a come-from-behind win, falling 2-6 in the opening set to Roman Narroquin and Mauri Butzke before storming back for a 6-2 win in the second and holding on 10-8 in the tiebreaker.

Also winning in tiebreakers were Chugiak’s Riley Fugere (boys No. 1 singles), the boys doubles teams of Ted Nichols/Francis Wanek and Ian Judd/Ben Nisonger; and the girls doubles team of Jordyn Bailey/Bethany Kesler. Girls No. 1 singles player Emilee Groth also won Thursday, claiming victory over Averyl Cobb in straight sets.

On Tuesday, Chugiak dropped an 8-1 decision to South in a match that saw the Mustangs drop all three matchers that went to a tiebreaker.

Chugiak faces Bartlett at 3:15 p.m. on Wednesday at the Alaska Club East in Anchorage.

Wolves fall to Cougars

Eagle River’s Stefan Retzlaff and Taiten Cogswell earned the tennis team’s lone victory in an 8-1 loss to Service on Aug. 30. Retzlaff and Cogswell won the first set 6-2, then closed things out with a 6-4 victory in the second.

Cogswell was also part of Eagle River’s only win during Tuesday’s 8-1 loss to West, teaming up with Stefon Petcleff to knock off the Eagles’ Cosmo Crowley and Hayden Wanamaker, 6-1, 6.3.

Eagle River faces East on Thursday, Sept. 6 at 3 p.m. in a match scheduled for the Alaska Club East in Anchorage.

All ASD teams are scheduled to play in the Anchorage Invitational Tournament Sept. 7-8 at the Alaska Club East.
