Crosstown rivals to meet on the ice as first-place Eagle River takes on Chugiak Saturday night at the Mac
Friends will meet at the Mac Saturday night for the first edition of this winter’s annual crosstown high school hockey series between two of the friendliest heated rivals in Alaska sports.
Newly crowned Cook Inlet Conference top dogs Eagle River will face off against crosstown rival Chugiak in a 7:15 p.m. match-up of two of the CIC’s hottest teams.
The Wolves knocked off South 1-0 Friday night to take over the top spot in the CIC. Conference leading scorer Ty McEnaney scored the game’s lone goal and Ryan Gray made it stand up with 19 saves to hand the Wolverines their first loss of the season.
Eagle River improved to 6-2 and enters Saturday’s game with a league-best 12 points. South fell to 5-1 (10 points).
Chugiak also enters Saturday’s showdown on a high note after hammering West 7-0 on Wednesday to improve to 4-2 in the CIC. Luke Momblow had a hat trick for the Mustangs, who also got two goals from Jarett Beckett and one each from Grant Epple and Christopher Kennedy. Olin Kelliher turned back eight shots to post the shutout.
The rivalry on the ice will be matched by the cooperation off it, where fans from the two schools will be competing in a donation drive to benefit teachers from the respective schools. Among the items being requested are boxes of Kleenex, hand sanitizer, pens and pencils, lotion, tea, healthy snacks, cough drops, hair ties, college ruled paper, Post-it notes, construction paper, paper towels, Sharpies and AAA batteries.
