Connelly wins bronze medal at Skyrunning Youth World Championships
Mikey Connelly continues to climb the ranks of the world’s top junior mountain runners.
The Chugiak 17-year-old took third place in the Youth A (16-17) vertical kilometer race at the 2019 Youth World Skyrunning Championships Aug. 2 on the Gran Sasso ridgelines near L’Aquila, Italy.
Connelly completed the 3.5-kilometer course in 42 minutes, 22.98 seconds to finish behind Andorra’s Oriol Olm Rouppert (who won in 40:00.24) and Spain’s Aitor Ugarte Eriz (41:25.65). The podium finish was an improvement of two spots over last year for the soon-to-be senior at Chugiak High, who was fifth at the world championships last year.
On Sunday, Connelly finished 12th in the second event of the championships, the Gran Sasso Skyrace. He completed the 16.7-kilometer course in 2 hours, 19 minutes and 24 seconds, about 24 minutes behind winner Ohmi Ryunosuke of Japan.
Connelly was the 2018 junior Mt. Marathon champion and is a two-time winner of the Alyeska Climbathon.
