Chugiak, Eagle River tennis squads stay busy

South holds off Chugiak

Emilee Groth won her No. 1 girls singles match against Mya Robinson to lead Chugiak in 7-2 high school tennis loss to South Thursday at Chugiak.

Francis Wanek and Bethany Kesler also posted a victory for the Mustangs, rallying to beat Lochlan Mullen and Abbie Hemry 10-2 in a tiebreaker. Mullen and Hemry won the first set in a tiebreaker before Wanek and Kesler rallied to take the second without losing a game.

Chugiak’s next match is at home against Eagle River on Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Lynx nip Mustangs

Dimond narrowly defeated Chugiak on Tuesday in high school tennis matches at Dimond High.

Chugiak got wins from Riley Fugere (boys No. 1 singles), Emilee Groth (girls No. 1 singles), Ted Nichols/Kaleb Hendershot (boys No. 1 doubles) and Francis Wanek/Bethany Kesler (mixed doubles).

Wolverines get past Wolves

Eagle River’s Griffin Marson earned a close win over South’s Dawson Bjorgen to pick up the Wolves’ lone win in an 8-1 high school tennis loss to South on Wednesday. Marson won 7-5, 6-3 in one of the closest matches of the day.

In another tight one, South’s Madison Griffin narrowly defeated the Wolves’ Irish Wolfe, rallying to take the second set 7-5 and winning a 12-10 tiebreaker after Wolfe took the first set.

West nets win over Eagle River

West took seven of nine prep tennis matches to claim a team win over Eagle River on Tuesday at West High.

Eagle River got wins from two doubles teams, including Stefan Retzlaff?Taiten Cogswell in boys doubles and Ella Bryner/Sarah von Luhrte in girls doubles.

The Wolves play Chugiak Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Chugiak.
