Chugiak’s Nelson gallops to victory at Palmer Invitational

Chugiak senior Hyrum Nelson won the Division I boys race at the Palmer Invitational on Saturday at the Janecek Trails.

Nelson finished in 15 minutes, 18.96 seconds to clock the day’s fastest overall time on the 5-kilometer course. Service’s Alex Maurer was second in 15:26.28, with South’s Kaleb Beloy (16:23.48 in third. Tristian Merchant of ACS won the Division II boys race in 16:11.99.

Nelson was one of three Mustangs in the top 10 as Chugiak finished second in the team standings to Dimond. Jacob Lestina finished ninth for Chugiak, followed by Michael Earnhart (10th), Will Gerlach (23rd) and Max Beiergrohslein (30th).

Eagle River’s Michael Olson was 25th and Will Michener finished 33rd for the Wolves.

Eagle River junior Emily Walsh led local girls with a fourth-place finish fourth in the Division I girls race to help the Wolves to a fourth place team finish. Claire Nelson was 26th, followed by Kiara Sherman (34th), Laura Ripp (47th), Mary Goodwin (50th), Amanda Michener (66th) and Aurora Pennington (75th).

Breanna Day finished eighth to lead the seventh-place Chugiak girls. Campbell Peterson was 31st for the Mustangs, Addison Capozzi took 39th, Kali Smedley finished 57th, Kiley Dennis placed 64th and Piper Belmer was 65th.
