POLICE BRIEFS: Man arrested in machete assault, high-schooler brings knife to school

On Oct. 1 at around 5:57 p.m., police said they responded to a residence on the Old Glenn Highway for a report of an assault. According to police, a man told them he and an acquaintance, 36-year-old Shane E. H. Kirk, 36, got into an argument over a mutual friend. Police said the man told them Kirk picked up a machete and hit him with it, but it did not cause injury due to the victim’s several layers of clothing.
Police said they obtained a warrant for Kirk’s arrest and arrested him several hours later on charges of third-degree assault and fourth-degree theft. He was taken to the Cook Inlet Pretrial Facility, where he remained Tuesday in lieu of a $10,000 cash appearance and $10,000 cash performance bond.
High schooler brings knife to school
On Oct. 1 at around 11:59 a.m. police said a Chugiak High student was found with a knife in his backpack. Police said no threats were made, there were no injuries and that charges were forwarded to the Department of Juvenile Justice. According to the Anchorage School District handbook, a student who brings a weapon to school is subject to punishment up to expulsion.
On Sept. 29 at around 6 p.m. police received a report that a 1994 blue Toyota pickup had been stolen from Mirror Lake Park. As of Monday the vehicle had not been recovered.
Girl charged with assault
On Oct. 1 at around 10:10 a.m. police said they were notified that a female student at Eagle River High had assaulted another female student at the school. Police said charges against the girl were forwarded to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
On Oct. 1 at around 2 p.m. police said they received a report that someone had broken through the front door of a home on Almdale Avenue and stole several items from inside while the homeowners were away.

Police make impaired driving arrests
On Oct. 2 at around 10:04 p.m. police said an officer stopped a Subaru on the Glenn Highway for weaving and arrested Ken T. W. Allen, 35, of Wasilla for operating under the influence. Police said Allen was also cited for driving while license revoked and no proof of insurance.
On Oct. 4 at around 12:24 a.m., police said they were on an unrelated call on Barclay Drive when a woman tried to drive past the parked patrol cars but couldn’t due to the one-lane road being blocked. Police said one of the officers went to speak with the driver and noticed signs of impairment and arrested the driver, Aurora M. Oleary, 24, for operating under the influence.
