HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Mustangs overpower East for first CIC win

Tuesday, November 19, 2019 - 11:46

Chugiak’s avalanche of hockey games turned into a mere flurry after one of a scheduled three straight games was postponed Thursday due to icy roads.

The Cook Inlet Conference game against Service on Thursday would have been Chugiak’s third game in three nights, but instead will be played at a future date.

Chugiak went 1-1 in its two games to start the week, falling to Dimond before knocking off East to improve to 1-2 in the conference. The Mustangs face South on Thursday and play Bartlett on Saturday.

Chugiak 6, East 1

Jarrett Beckett scored a pair of shorthanded goals as Chugiak turned a close game into a blowout with a 6-1 CIC win over East on Nov. 13 at Ben Boeke.

Spencer Schroeder gave Chugiak a 1-0 lead after the first period with a goal off assists from Nate Carey and Kaylin Garner, but the T-birds tied things up late in the second on an unassisted goal by AJ Pflugh.

Chugiak (1-2) pulled away with five goals in the third, with Shayden Davis giving the team the lead for good with 12:45 to go in the period. Davis’s goal was followed by strikes from Luke Momblow and Tyler Huffer — who each notched assists on Beckett’s back-to-back shorties to close out the scoring.

Rachael Symmes made five saves for Chugiak, which outshot East 63-6. Bryce Erickson made 57 saves for the T-birds.

Dimond 3, Chugiak 0

Dimond goalie Hunter Kattness stopped all 24 shots he faced to earn a shutout in Dimond’s 3-0 CIC win over Chugiak on Nov. 12 at the McDonald Center in Eagle River. Daegen Love made 25 saves for the Mustangs.

Eagles fly past Wolves

Gavin McDonald had the lone goal for Eagle River as the Wolves dropped a 4-1 CIC decision to West on Friday at Ben Boeke.

Jacob James had an assist for the Wolves (0-2), who got 28 saves from Ryan Gray.

Four different players scored for the Eagles (2-0), who outshot Eagle River 32-13. The Wolves were scheduled to play Bartlett on Nov. 20, but a score wasn’t available when the Star went to press. The Wolves host East tonight (Nov. 21) at 7:15 p.m. at the McDonald Center.

Girls fall to Dimond/West
