Trio of local teams to play in three-day Palmer hoops tournament
Chugiak clamped down on defense Monday night to earn a 49-47 Cook Inlet Conference boys basketball win over West Monday night at West High.
The Mustangs allowed just 13 second-half points to rally from a five-point halftime deficit.
Zach Cole led a balanced Chugiak offense with 10 points, with Josh Cardon, Austin Harr and Owen Lewis adding eight points each.
The Mustangs improved to 1-0 in the CIC while West fell to 0-1.
Chugiak will play in the three-day Palmer Elks Showdown this weekend, opening against Eagle River at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. Chugiak will play Palmer Friday at 7:45 p.m. and conclude the tournament with a noon game on Saturday against Valdez.
Chugiak will return to conference play against South on Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at South.
West girls 46, Chugiak 44 (OT)
West got 3-pointers from Natalie Drussell and Juliette Adlawan in overtime to key a 46-44 win over Chugiak in the CIC girls basketball opener for both teams Monday at West High.
Chugiak led 27-17 at halftime but scored just four points in the third quarter as West rallied.
Ari Lewis scored 20 points to lead the Mustangs (0-1), who got six points each from Sophia Fuller and Skylar Alexander.
Ah-Kazee Galloway-Davis led the Eagles (1-0) with 14 points.
Chugiak’s next game is a nonconference clash with Colony at 6:30 p.m. at Chugiak.
Wolves swept at East
Eagle River dropped a pair of CIC basketball games against East on Monday, with the East girls taking a 33-28 decision and the East boys winning 83-32.
Both teams will participate in the Palmer Elks Shootout this weekend. The Eagle River boys will play Chugiak at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Valdez at 4:15 p.m. Friday and Palmer at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. The girls play Juneau Thursday at 4:15 p.m., Valdez Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Palmer Saturdady at 5:15 p.m.
The Wolves play Bartlett on Tuesday, Jan. 21 starting with the girls game at 6 p.m. followed by the boys at 7:30 p.m.
