MVP for Chugiak’s Lewis, new scoring record for Wolves’ Johnson at Palmer Showdown
Chugiak won the Palmer Elks Showdown boys basketball tournament behind award-winning performances from Owen Lewis and Austin Harr at Palmer High.
The Mustangs concluded the tournament with a 73-60 win over Valdez to finish 3-0. Chugiak also defeated Palmer 69-64 on Friday. Harr led all scorers with 20 points in Saturday’s finale, Zach Cole had 15 and Jackson Wall added 14.
Following the tournament, Lewis was named tournament MVP and Harr was named to the all-tournament team.
Also making the all-tourney team was Eagle River sophomore Jack Lerch. The Wolves went 0-3, but Lerch had a team-high 20 points in Eagle River’s 54-45 loss to Palmer on Saturday.
The Eagle River girls went 1-2 behind a record-breaking performance by freshman Mikayla Johnson. Johnson set a new Eagle River single-game scoring record — boys or girls — with 31 points in the Wolves’ 41-40 win over Valdez on Friday. Johnson was joined on the all-tournament team by teammate Kiara Sherman for the Wolves, who lost to Juneau and Palmer on Saturday.
CHS girls fall to Bartlett
The Chugiak girls dropped a 55-32 Cook Inlet Conference decision to Bartlett on Friday at Chugiak.
BCS sweeps again
Birchwood Christian earned a second straight high school basketball sweep Friday, with the girls team knocking off Cook Inlet Academy 41-20 and the boys winning 51-45.
