Power restored to more than 2,000 MEA members

UPDATE: MEA announced at around 7:15 p.m. that power had been restored to all impacted members. The cooperative said anyone without power should call them at (907) 696-7697 or via the MEA Smart Hub.

“Thank you again for your patience on this cold night!” MEA wrote in a status update on Facebook.

More than 2,000 Matanuska Electric Association members in Chugiak, Birchwood, Eklutna and Peters Creek were without power Friday after an outage at MEA’s Reed Substation.

According to the co-op, the outage was first reported at around 2 p.m. Friday. At 3:30 p.m. MEA said crews discovered damaged equipment and were working to make repairs while switching power to other substations. As of 4:46 p.m. MEA said users should be prepared for the outage to last for at least another hour.

Temperatures in the area were reportedly around minus two degrees at around 5 p.m. Friday.

According to MEA’s online outage map, about 1,900 of its roughly 2,300 members in the Eklutna/Peters Creek area were without power, as were around 250 of its approximately 2,500 members in the Birchwood/Chugiak area.
