Wolves have a howling good time on the Kenai

Eagle River’s boys and girls basketball teams completed a successful road trip over the weekend, returning from the Kenai Spur Highway with a pair of non conference sweeps of Kenai Central and Nikiski.

On Friday, Mikayla Johnson poured in a game-high 26 points to lead the Eagle River girls to a 48-29 win over the Kardinals in Kenai. Lila Wegener had seven points and Amaya Hudson scored six for the Wolves, who outscored Kenai 19-4 in the third quarter.

In Friday’s boys game, Sean Berry scored 26 points and Marcus Andrews had 21 as the Wolves shot past Kenai. Eagle River finished with nine 3-pointers, including six from Berry and a pair from Andrews.

Johnson again led all scorers with 23 points Saturday as the Wolves held off Nikiski 50-42 at Nikiski Jr./Sr. High. Wegener scored 10 points for Eagle River, which got five each from Kamryn Perry and Kiara Sherman.

The Eagle River boys completed the successful trip with a second straight lopsided victory Saturday, muzzling the Bulldogs 69-48 behind a balanced scoring effort that saw five players score at least eight points. Berry led everyone with 20 points, Jack Lerch added 16 and Andrews had 12 for the Wolves, who got eight each from Mekhi Womak and Shawn Padilla.
