Local skiers post fast times on first day of U.S. Junior Nationals

Chugiak’s Adrianna Proffitt opened the U.S. Cross Country Skiing Junior National Championships with a fourth-place finish Monday in the women’s under-20 division 5-kilometer interval start classic technique race in Soda Springs, California.

The Alaska Nordic Racing skier and Chugiak High senior was the top Alaskan in the race, finishing 29 seconds behind winner Anna Parent of Canmore, Alberta. Eagle River’s Helen Wilson, a freshman at UAA who also skis for ANR, finished 14th.

ANR’s Emily Walsh placed 30th in the women’s U18 race and Claire Nelson was 55th. Both skiers attend Eagle River High. ANR’s Aila Berrigan of Palmer was 76th.

Michael Earnhart of Eagle River (ANR/Chugiak High) finished 14th in the U18 men’s classic race won by Vermont’s Will Koch. Anchorage’s Alexander Maurer was second. ANR’s Max Beiergrohslein finished 44th, Porter Blei was 59th, Garrett Streit finished 65th and Kaj Taylor was 67th. Beiergrohslein and Blei are from Eagle River; Streit and Taylor are from Palmer.

Alaska skiers swept the top four spots in the U20 men’s race, with APU’s Ari Endestad winning followed by APU teammates Everett Cason, Kai Meyers and Garrett Butts. Palmer’s Joseph Walling, who skis for the Eagle River-based ANR club team, finished seventh.
