State biologists shot and killed a brown bear Wednesday morning in Chugiak after the sow and its three cubs raided trash cans and attacked 22 chickens and a goat, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game.

It’s the agency’s first bear kill of the season in the Municipality of Anchorage, said Ken Marsh, a Fish and Game spokesman.

Over the weekend, he said, the department received a significant increase in reports of bear activity within the municipality, both sightings and concerns about bears getting into garbage.
