Eagle River American Legion improved to 5-3 overall with 12-9 win over West Post 1 on Sunday, June 17 at Loretta French Park.

“It wasn’t pretty, but it was effective,” head coach Gregg Frost said. “We pulled out a win.”

Relief pitcher R.J. Dirscherl got the win for Eagle River, who used four different pitchers over seven innings.

“It was pitching by committee,” Frost said. “We got it done.”

Kyle Frost led Eagle River with a three-run triple and a double. Zach Weller had three hits and drove in a run.

Chris Parker hit a triple and scored two runs, and Wesley Bennice scored three runs. Dirscherl and Mike Rosenberg each had doubles for Eagle River.

Eagle River had 12 total hits and scored at least one run in every inning.

Eagle River heads to Fairbanks this weekend for the Midnight Sun Tournament. Eagle River opens with Dimond on Friday, June 22 at 7 p.m. at Arco Field. Eagle River plays Bartlett on Saturday, June 23 at 10 a.m., then Fairbanks at 4 p.m. the same day at Arco and finishes against West on Sunday, June 24 at 11 a.m. at Marlin Field.

Eagle River resumes regular season play Wednesday, June 27 against Wasilla at 6:30 p.m. at Loretta French.


Chugiak splits with Twins

Chugiak Post 33 split a doubleheader with Kenai Post 20 on Sunday, June 17 at Oberg Field. After losing 14-4 in the first game, Chugiak (5-5 overall) earned a decisive 18-3 victory in the second game.

Chugiak plays East on Saturday, June 23 at 1 p.m. at Kosinski No. 4 then travels to Chad Bax Field to take on Service the following day at 6:30 p.m. Chugiak plays South on Tuesday, June 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Taylar Young Memorial Field.


South 5, Eagle River 3

Eagle River held a 2-1 lead going into the ninth inning, but fell to South 5-3 in extra innings Saturday, June 16 at Loretta French Park.

After tying the game in the ninth, South scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning. Eagle River rallied, but left the tying run on base, coach Frost said.

“We had it,” he said. “We weren’t able to hold it.”

David Fuller pitched seven innings for Eagle River and only surrendered one, unearned run.

“David Fuller pitched a phenomenal game for us,” coach Frost said.

Colby LeBlanc racked up four hits and two RBIs for Eagle River. Kyle Frost had two hits, including a triple, and scored a run.

The game was Eagle River’s first at home of the Legion season.

“It was very nice, very nice to be out there,” coach Frost said.

The field, which Eagle River shares with the Alaska Baseball League’s Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks, is improving each week, coach Frost said.

“It’s in fantastic shape,” he said.


Wasilla 18, Chugiak 9

The visiting Alaska Road Warriors handed Chugiak an 18-9 loss on Thursday, June 14 at Oberg Field.
