Chugiak baseball, Eagle River softball teams open seasons on a tear

Chugiak’s hot start to the high school baseball season continued with a 27-2 Cook Inlet Conference thrashing of Service on Saturday at Mulcahy Stadium.

Chugiak scored 13 runs in the first inning and nine in the third, piling up 19 hits and taking advantage of seven Service errors. Ian Frizelle went 6 for 6 with four RBIs for Chugiak, which got three hits each from Jacob Kosinski, Gus Lewis and Billy Smith. Frizelle also earned the win as a pitcher, giving up three hits and two earned runs in 4 ⅔ innings of the five-inning game.

The Mustangs improved to 8-1 overall and 2-0 in the CIC with the win after opening the conference season with an 8-3 win over South on May 2.

Eagle River opened its CIC season with a 4-1 win over Bartlett on May 3 behind two hits each from Sterling Retzlaff, Damien Frederick, Mason Piper and Daniel Bodine. Starter Cam Witte gave up seven hits and one earned run in seven innings for the Wolves.

On Saturday, Eagle River dropped an 11-1 CIC decision to West but bounced back for a 6-3 win over East Monday to improve to 2-1 in the CIC and 7-5 overall.

Eagle River softball sweeps Mustangs

Eagle River swept rival Chugiak in a pair of Cook Inlet Conference softball games May 1, knocking off the Mustangs 9-6 in the first game and 4-2 in the second game at the Knik Fields. Amanda Michener had three RBIs for the Wolves and starting pitcher Avery Brown picked up the win.

In the second game, Zosia Krupa had two hits and two RBIs for the Wolves and Brown pitched six innings to get the win. Kylie Seagroves had two hits for the Mustangs.

The Wolves also picked up a big win Saturday, knocking off Dimond 9-0 behind a perfect game by Brown and a grand slam by Liberty Argudin to improve to 6-1 on the season.
